For those of you who don’t know, Orangetheory is a workout based on the science of interval training. You wear a heart rate monitor during the class and it tells the instructor when to push you harder and when to back off. The goal is to get your heart rate into the “orange zone” which is 80-90% of your maximum heart rate.
I did my first Orangetheory workout yesterday and I’m already hooked! I can’t wait to go back tomorrow. Here’s what you can expect from an Orangetheory workout:
First, you’ll warm up for about 5-10 minutes on the treadmill, rowing machine, or elliptical. Then, it’s time for the main event! The main part of the workout alternates between periods of high intensity (think all-out sprints) and low intensity (recovery pace).
Each high intensity interval lasts for 1 minute followed by a 1 minute recovery. This pattern continues for anywhere from 20-60 minutes depending on the class. After the main section of the workout, you’ll cool down for 5-10 minutes on one of the cardio machines.
And that’s it! Pretty simple, right? But don’t be fooled – this workout is no joke.
It’s intense, but in a good way. I left yesterday’s workout feeling completely exhausted but also exhilarated. I can’t wait to see how much my fitness improves with regular Orangetheory workouts!
